Attach an image when you need a reference
An attached image can serve as a drafting reference. For example, AutoCAD’s image attachment controls include the image path, insertion location and scale. Attaching it does not itself convert each visible mark into an independent line entity.
A raster reference may already meet the need for a background, illustration or manual tracing aid. Moving or scaling the whole image is different from editing one structural line inside it.
Trace when you need editable drawing objects
Tracing derives linework from image pixels. This site also recognizes drawing labels and produces CAD output for further inspection and editing. If OCR processing fails, the job fails instead of substituting outlined letters for text.
The source still needs to contain distinguishable information. Missing structure, hidden surfaces in a perspective photograph and unspecified real dimensions cannot be established by conversion alone. Review either manual or automatic tracing for its intended use.
Test the actual editing operations
Select an edge in CAD software and inspect whether it can be edited as geometry. Then select a label and check its character content. A DWG extension or a zoomable view is not enough to establish either property.
A drawing may contain both raster references and CAD geometry. Inspect the objects you intend to use, including their properties and external references. Actual editing behavior is stronger evidence than a screenshot.
